MIM - Music and Identity in Migration
MIM - Music and Identity in Migration
The Youth-Project MIM is targeted on the inclusion of adolescents with a migrational background as well as young persons in the transition between education/apprenticeship and business and it will focus music and identity in their migrations from tradition to modernity, from one cultural background to another.
Especially we focus on the topic migration by bringing together young migrants with musical interest from all over Europe that came to Berlin because of its vivid music scene with the youth that grew up here and collectively traveling back to the migrants places of origin to get back to the cultural roots (traditional music and history).
In workshops and creative sessions the young participants - on an equal basis with professional musicians, experts, scientists and educators - work concertedly on integrating traditional music into electronic production (digital/analogue) and thus translating it to a modern vein that is aware of it’s cultural background.
By ways of the equality of the young participants with coordinators, experts and professionals and in connection with the collectively elaborated code of conduct we want to increase their awareness about possible problems in intercultural communication processes to bring forward tolerance and social cohesion as well as the participants personal development.
The whole project will be accompanied by scientists of cultural studies (esp. migration research) as well as music pedagogues that collect scientific data to provide by this means the scientific as well as the educational discourse.
We applied for a grant at the European Program YOUTH IN ACTION to arrange a feasibility visit in May 2010 to prepare for the first exchange with Aarhus, Denmark. In Aarhus the Danish Institute of electronic Music (DIEM) is our partner promoter.
Aim of this project is to bring together young European citizens with cultural experts to work concertedly on topics like:
“integrating tradition and modernity"
“music as a supranational language"
as well as “cultural diversity and freedom of choice”
